West Somerset College entered four students and Minehead Middle School one. Sadly six other contestants dropped out at the last minute. However, 11 year old ROXANA SRAMSKA from Minehead Middle School made a very worthy winner with her piece of salmon served on top of basil pesto pasta with avocado and olives followed by deliscious honey and banana pancakes. This was her first competition and she was up against older students from the college, but she proved to be a very creative young chef. She is sponsored by The Rotary Club of Bridgwater now and will go forward to the District Round of Rotary Young Chef to be held at West Somerset College on February 8th 2025 along with 13 year old SAPPHIRE HADDON, the West Somerset College winner.
This was Sapphires third competition and this time her perseverance paid off. She came first and is sponsered by Minehead Rotary Club. The two judges Richard Hands, chief lecturer at Petrocs College in Barnstaple and Lewis Singletary, General Manager and Chef of Croyde Bay Holiday Resort both said that" Sapphire had huge potential", encouraging words for one so young.
She was very ambitious and cooked butternut squash with parmesan ravioli served with a creamy onion veloute and chives followed by black forest profiteroles. Both girls made their own pasta and impressed the judges with their culinary skills. They had to cook a two course meal for two in two hours and were marked on their skills, creativity and safety in the kitchen as well as setting a table for the food they had prepared.
Vere Kennett West Somerset College Cookery Teacher who runs an after school Cookery Club on a wednesday to encourage the youngsters with their culinary skills and Mollie Foster, Minehead Rotary Club were also in attendance on the day, both of whom said how impressed they were with the high standard of cuisine that the students presented to the judges.
Minehead Rotary Club president Andrew De Moro presented all the youngsters including, Elif Liyan, Ellie Saunderson, and Tammy Ruddy, who was the runner up, with their certificates .

Competitions for Young People
DO YOU LIKE PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING, WRITING STORIES OR POETRY OR HAVE OTHER SKILLS THAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT – READ ON.
One of Rotary’s leading commitments is to offer young people the platforms and opportunities for them to unlock their potential, develop their skills and broaden their horizons.
We invite all groups including Scouts, Guides and Cadets to encourage their members with appropriate skills to consider entering one of these national competitions. You may already have heard through your school that these competitions are available, but this is an opportunity to start thinking about your entry for any one of the following groups. For all but the Young Musician (which is age group 11 – 17 years) entrants can be any age from 7 years to 17 years on 31st August 2023. Entries for most of the the local heats are to be submitted by the end of the year – 31st December 2023.
