2023-2024
Exmoor Young Chef, leading to Rotary Young Chef
We are very pleased to report that Katrina Nightingale from Wiveliscombe, who won the Exmoor Young Chef Competition at the West Somerset Community College in Minehead back in October 2023, progressed through two further rounds of the competition in Bridgwater and Cardiff to reach the National Rotary Young Chef Final on April 20th 2024 at St Benedict's School in Alcester, near Stratford-upon-Avon.
She excelled yet again and finished a close runner-up to the winner, 14 year old Rowan Haines from Scotland, who won a trip to Italy for a cookery course! It was a stong field and the judges were amazed at the high standards demonstrated by all of the entrants
"Entering the Exmoor Young chef was such an enjoyable experience; I got the chance to have a local chef be my mentor which was a great opportunity to improve my skills and learn new techniques relevant to my dishes. The day of the competition was very nerve racking as it was my first ever cooking competition and I didn't really know what to expect but everyone was so friendly and supportive, and it was great to see the other contestants ideas and completed dishes, as well as the large variety of local produce available in the Exmoor area.
Winning Exmoor young chef 2023 has provided me with new options for my future career, as well as giving me the confidence and opportunity to enter the National Rotary Young Chef competition which until taking part in the Exmoor competition I would never have even contemplated doing."
Katrina was supported by the Rotary Clubs of Minehead and Wiveliscombe and is considering entering the 2024-2025 competition.
