Our project for 2024/2025/2026

Disability Aids for
the Copperbelt in Zambia

Picture
A project led by Richard Robbins, working with the Rotary Club of Ndola Central, and others.

When I was discussing plans for 2025 onwards, Nkonde Chola of the Rotary Club of Ndola Central mentioned that there is a desperate need for equipment for people with physical disabilities in Zambia, as there is in many low to middle income countries. We agreed that we would investigate whether it might be possible to source and ship suitable equipment from the UK, thereby making a valuable contibution to the situation in and around Ndola.

Imagine the profound difference a wheelchair can make in the life of someone with a disability in Zambia. For many, it's the key to mobility, independence, and participation in their community. The stark reality is that there's a severe shortage of this essential equipment, leaving countless individuals isolated and without support.
Minehead Rotary Club, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Ndola Central, is taking direct action to address this urgent need. Building on our established relationship and successful projects like our initiative to alleviate period poverty, we've embarked on an ambitious project: to ship a 40' container filled with refurbished wheelchairs and other vital disability equipment to the Copperbelt region of Zambia.

We've joined forces with PhysioNet, a remarkable charity that collects and refurbishes surplus equipment. Their work and long experience of shipping equipment to countries around the world will be invaluable to make this ambitious project a reality.
We've already seen incredible support from Rotary Clubs in our District, with pledges reaching £6,500 and  we will be continuing to approach other clubs in our District. However, now we are reaching out beyond our network to ask if you could be a part of this life-changing initiative. Your contribution, no matter the size, will directly help us reach our target sooner and bring hope and mobility to those who desperately need it in Zambia.
The bulk of the budget is not the equipment but the shipping and road transportation costs and the project has an overall target of about £12,000. We have so far raised £6,500 from Rotary clubs and we will continue to approach more clubs for support. However, we also need to raise funds ourselves, here in Minehead.

The disability aids we will be sending will be truly life-changing for the recipients in Zambia. I have set up a GoFundMe appeal for the project and hope that you might consider making a contribution to our cause. You can use the QR code below, or the click on it to be taken to our appeal on the GoFundMe website.

All donations will be channelled through Minehead Rotary Club, ensuring they are used solely for this vital project.
